Ferns need light, free draining soil, so at the time of planting incorporate compost and peat. Some ferns can tolerate quite dry conditions once established.

Water deeply once or twice a week during any dry period. Overhead sprinklers are they reduce water loss from the leaves, helping to keep the atmosphere surrounding the ferns cool and humid.

Ferns do not like stagant, soggy or boggy soil, it will cause their roots to rot and they will eventually die.

Plant in filtered or dappled light, with early morning or late afternoon sun as dense shade is not generally tolated. Full sun is okay for some species but they must have ample moisture to survive.

Some ferns are more sensitive to frost than others so if unsure check the label or ask your nursey man. Avoid strong winds as ferns generally live in faily sheltered environments. Stong wind will lower humidity and cause windburn.

Planting ferns in groups helps to raise humidity. Do not plant ferns too deep, the grown should never be buried as the basal roots can rot theough a lack of oxygen.

Tree ferns are shallow rooted so they need anchoring against the wind when planted and remember they love rotted organic matter, a small amount of blood and bone will help them grow. There are hundreds of ferns so pick the one that suits your area. Ferns do not like being in pots. With in your garden there are small micro climates use them well and your garden will blossom.
